"der mann ist ein meister der entspannung. das beweist raphaël marionneau der franzose mit dem süßen akzent, unter anderem mit dem café abstrait im mojo".
the father of the couch culture

in 1970 raphaël marionneau was born in nantes, france. in the early years, he worked in various radio stations and studied graphic design. raphaël arrived in hamburg in summer 1993 to work as graphic designer at peter schmidt´s design studio and started to work as graphic-designer in 1995 for the international well-known venue: the mojo club. from october 1996 to may 2003, raphaël marionneau has been the resident and man behind the french chillout club le café abstrait, once a month at the mojo club on the reeperbahn. over the years, his club - the first chillout club in hamburg - etablished itself as legendary event and the most famous regular chillout event of germany.

french chillout and classical music

with his very particular music style, raphaël marionneau is now considered by the press like one of the most influant and innovative djs of the german metropole of hamburg and created a music style called the french chillout. he was invited to play during the past years to many events and venues in germany. he played too in renowmed clubs in switzerland, austria and at café del mar on ibiza in summer 2001.

in june 2001, raphaël marionneau launched at the mojo club, a club concept called le classique abstrait and mixed classical music, film soundtracks and new classic. the event, supported by the deutsche grammophon, received a great feeback. from summer 2001 to winter 2002, raphaël presented the radio show le classique abstait on the german broadcast klassik radio: two hours show of classical mix, thursdays at 22.00 and sundays at 20.00. it was the first radio show mixed by a dj on a classical broadcast in germany. with the success of his classical event, raphaël marionneau proposes le classique abstrait, every 3 monthes at the konzerthaus dortmund for the seasons 2002/03, 2003/04 and 2004/05. since 2001, le classique abstrait is one of the successful classical clubbing events of germany.

raphaël made a tour over germany in summer 2002 to present his couch culture concept in 11 cities like cologne, berlin, hannover, ausburg, heidelberg and kiel. during the year 2002, raphaël presented a variation of his french chillout club at the luna club: abstrait in kiel. since june 2002 raphaël marionneau and thomas kraupe present the multimedia show at the planetarium of hamburg: le voyage abstrait is a great success and highlight at the planetarium. the show became monthly in april 2004.

since summer 2003, raphaël presents a summer event l'été abstrait at the european largest sand sculpture festival sandworld in travemünde, near lübeck in germany.

founding a network

with the success of his events and his first album, raphaël marionneau founded in 2002 the label abstrait music with nartak d. schuebel from freeform records. he released the compilation serie of le café abstrait. the 4 first volumes were acclaimed as ones of the best chillout compilations of the past years. raphaël released too the compilation of classical music called le classique abstrait in cooperation with deutsche grammophone. he compiled the album metropolitan classics for spiegel edition in 2002 and les ambassadeurs with bruno from ibiza, the resident dj of café del mar in winter 2003.

over the years, raphaël marionneau created a complete network called abstrait network, providing events (le café abstrait, le classique abstrait, le voyage abstrait, le noël abstrait, l’été abstrait, etc.), concerts (le concert abstrait), albums (abstrait music), radio shows (le classique abstrait bei klassik radio, etc.) and booking agency. his office is located in neuer kamp in hamburg.

raphaël has been the founding member, music consultant and graphic design of the label jubilee records (created with nartak d. schuebel) that released newcomer artists like deep-dive-corp., the havana boys, orbient, hippihaus, etc. raphaël works as art-director and graphic designer for the etrema project.
